Dealing with temper tantrums

Dealing with temper tantrums is a hot topic.  Some experts say to make your exit when dealing with temper tantrums.  Others say that dealing with temper tantrums is just a matter of parents staying calm, communicating, and keeping control.  What works when dealing with temper tantrums?  We asked a few parents to share their strategies for dealing with temper tantrums:

“I give my child a choice – if I put it like that, she chooses more often than not to avoid punishment.”

“My children know that they will lose what means the most to them, whether it’s a blanket or time spent with friends.  They know I’m not bluffing, because I never have, and they get themselves in control much more quickly.”

I have come to realize that you need to improvise and be firm.  No matter where you are, be prepared to leave, for a very good cause.  Never let your child think for a moment that you might give in, even in the smallest way.  No matter how long it takes, stick it out, because if you give at the time, you’ll pay later.

Plato said, “Necessity is the mother of invention.”  What creative methods have you come up with for dealing with temper tantrums simply because you had to?  You have a chance to help people in situations like yours too, by sharing what works for you.  What do you or have you done when dealing with temper tantrums?  Go to www.authorstaceygeist.wordpress.com , click on Kids are Awesome, and tell your stories!  Your comments of frustration and/or victory about dealing with temper tantrums might help someone else who is dealing with temper tantrums.
